China Maglev in Shanghai

Fulfilled a longtime dream to ride the Maglev train in Shanghai. Maximum speed was 41 km/h! The technology exists!

COTA International Conference of Transportation Professionals, Shanghai, Ch

A special thank you to the Chinese Overseas Transportation Association (COTA) for the invitation to participate in their 17th COTA International Conference of Transportation Professionals (CICTP2017) from July 7-9, 2017, in Shanghai, China, hosted by Tongji University. I had the opportunity to speak in the opening session about the Future of Transportation and in another session about the developments in Connected and Automated Vehicle deployment. I also enjoyed participating in a great student session containing presentations in Traffic Flow Theory. I'm grateful to COTA and Tongji for their hospitality! I also had the chance to ride high speed rail from Beijing to Shanghai and take the Maglev (max speed 270 mph) to the Shanghai airport. Very inspiring!

South China University of Technology Workshop, Guangzhou

I was very pleased to visit the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou China on July 4 to participate in a workshop on the Future Transportation System: Safe, Green and Intelligent. I presented a lecture entitled, "Bringing Order to Chaos: The Growing Role of Proactive Traffic Management Solutions." I appreciated the chance to participate!

Guest Lecture at Didi in Beijing, China

I had the opportunity to visit Didi in Beijing to introduce USF/CUTR and present a lecture entitled, "Leveraging Multimodal Transportation System Data: Understanding How the System Works and Creating Future Transportation Choices." Special thanks to Li Huan for organizing everything and to Didi for their hospitality!

Visit to Transportation Technology Center, Pueblo, Colorado

On June 28-29, 2017, CUTR’s Transit Standards Working Group continued their work during a meeting hosted by CUTR’s project partner, the Transportation Technology Center, Inc., in Pueblo, Colorado. One primary objective of the meeting was the validation and prioritization of the project team’s initial list of transit safety standard focus areas for consideration. In addition, the group was tasked with the review and input to focus area research activities and associated recommendations for FTA related to: event data recorders for rail and bus; crashworthiness/CEM for rail and bus; emergency lighting and signage for rail; and tunnel standards.

CUTC Meeting in Buffalo

I was pleased to return to the Council of University Transportation Centers' annual summer meeting after an absence of eight years, this one was in Buffalo, New York, and of course that meant a visit to Niagara Falls, this time on the U.S. side and the Maid of the Mist!

Visit of Daniel Kress from University of Federal Armed Forces, Germany

We are pleased to welcome Daniel Kress, master's student in Civil Engineering at the University of Federal Armed Forces in Munich, Germany. Daniel will be working on his Master’s thesis at CUTR from April-August 2017, the topic of which is: Variable Speed Limit Systems Algorithms and Implementations – A Worldwide Overview. Daniel's visit is part of a partnership with Prof. Klaus Bogenberger. After graduating from the University of Federal Armed Forces in September 2017, he will continue his military service as an officer in becoming an Air Traffic Controller in the German Air Force. Welcome Daniel!

TTI Technology Conference

I was pleased to serve as moderator for a session at the TTI Technology conference in Bryan, TX on May 4, 2017. I was also especially thrilled to see the new TTI Director, Greg Winfree, and congratulate him personally on his new position!

Hillsborough County Vision Zero Demonstration Project

The CUTR team participated in a Vision Zero demonstration event in Temple Terrace - a green bike lane was painted (using temporary paint) to illustrate how a low cost investment can make a big difference. Thanks to all who participated!

Visit of Prof. Alex Skabardonis

We were very honored to welcome Prof. Alex Skabardonis from the University of California at Berkeley to CUTR on Friday March 31, 2017. Prof. Skabardonis visited the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) to discuss the CV Pilot, and he also presented a seminar "Developing Advanced Traffic Signal Control Algorithms: the Role of Connected Vehicles." We hope to welcome him again to our campus!

96th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board in Washington, D.C.

As always it was a wonderful and busy week at the Transportation Research Board 96th Annual Meeting held January 8-12 in Washington, D.C. I was a co-author on 6 presented papers, gave 1 presentation, chaired 1 session, led the Operations Section Executive Board Meeting and participated in a meeting of the Transportation Research Record Review Advisory Board. I also attended all 13 committee meetings and 1 task force meeting within the Operations Section, attended the meeting of all Section Chairs, and the Committee Chair “speed dating” session. It was wonderful to have a large group of USF students and faculty in attendance. CUTR also had a very large presence, with our reception, booth, many papers, presentations and meeting.
