ITS Evaluation Workshop

Had the opportunity to participate in the EasyWay Workshop on ITS Evaluation in Copenhagen on November 8, 2012. I gave a presentation on "Other Sources for ITS Results: U.S. Perspectives," including some discussion of the U.S. DOT's ITS Evaluation knowledge resources, that include details on benefits, costs, and lessons learned. EasyWay is a European Project that includes an extensive archive of ITS evaluation reports. There is another European ITS Evaluation program that is described on the ITS Toolkit website.

ITS World Congress, Vienna, Austria

Excellent experience at the 19th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems, held in Vienna, Austria. First responsibility was to serve on the International Programme Committee as well as the Americas Rapporteur for the Sustainable, Clean and Energy Efficient Mobility track. I also was a co-author for a technical paper, "Traffic Flow Effects of a Variable Speed Limit System on a German Autobahn: An Empirical Analysis," with Klaus Bogenberger and Simone Weikl, University of Federal Armed Forces Munich, Germany, presented in session TS017 - Sensor & Detection Systems - Safety & Enforcement. I also was a speaker in session SIS88 - Innovation in ITS, and I moderated session TS094 - Electromobility - Infrastructure (1). Finally, I was the organizer and moderator for session SIS59 - 21st Century Workforce Development: Changing the Way We Think About ITS Education and Training. I also participated in the 5th NEARCTIS Workshop, and spoke on a panel on Structuring Future Research Effort in Road Cooperative Traffic Management from the U.S. perspective. NEARCTIS is a Network of Excellence for Advanced Road
Cooperative traffic management in the Information Society.

Visit to Riga, Latvia

I was honored to have the opportunity to provide a plenary lecture, "US Research in Public Transportation Using ITS Data: Bus Operations and Optimal Stop Spacing" for the 12th Annual Reliability and Statistics in Transportation and Communication (RelStat’12) Conference held at the Transport and Telecommunication Institute, 17–20 October 2012 in Riga, Latvia. This was held in conjunction with the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action TU0903 Methods and Tools for Supporting the Use, Calibration and Validation of Traffic Simulation Models Workshop, which I also participated in, and the COST Action TU1004 Workshop on Modelling Public Transport Passenger Flows in the Era of Intelligent Transport Systems. Great colleagues and many thanks to our gracious hosts!

ITE Simulation Roundtable

On October 4, 2012, I had the opportunity to present a quick tutorial on Traffic Flow Theory to the Oregon/Washington ITE Simulation Roundtable. Some very good discussion about simulation, with a lively group of about 60 transportation agency and consulting firm staff who focus on simulation across all types of platforms.

WTS Grant Writing Workshop

On October 9, 2012, I had the opportunity to join KC Cooper, Jon Fink and Art Pearce to present the WTS Grant Writing Workshop, held at the Governor Hotel. It was a great experience, and our class of about 30 students were highly interactive and creative! Thanks to Kristie Gladhill for inviting me to participate!

TrafficQuest - The Future of Traffic Management

I had the privilege of working at TrafficQuest this past year one day per week. TrafficQuest is a center of excellence focusing on traffic management, and is a partnership between Rijkswaterstaat, TNO and TU Delft. I had the pleasure of participating in the development of the English translation of this very useful document The Future of Traffic Management. Please let us know what you think!

Intelligent Vehicle Symposium

Had a great experience at the IEEE Intelligent Vehicle Symposium (IV12) organized by Miguel Angel Sotelo and his team at the Polytechnic School of the University of Alcalá (EPS/ETSII UAH), in Alcalá de Henares, Spain. I was fortunate to be asked to deliver one of the keynote addresses, "Toward Environmental Sustainability in a Connected World." The University of Alcala was founded in 1499 and has a beautiful historic campus in the city center. They also have a concerted focus on sustainability, similar to PSU.

Visit to Lyon

Had a great visit with wonderful colleagues and presented lectures at the Laboratoire d'Ingénierie Circulation Transports (LICIT) which is part of the Ecole Nationale des Travaux Publics de l'Etat (ENTPE) and L’Institut français des sciences et technologies des transports, de l’aménagement et des réseaux (IFSSTAR, formerly INRETS) as well as the Universite de Lyon. Ludovic Leclercq and Christine Buisson (fellow members of the TRB Committee on Traffic Flow Theory and Characteristics) and the entire LICIT team were excellent hosts and it was a great and fruitful experience.
